Family Lunch

At fourth-generation Laurelbrook Farm, family lunch is as much a part of the daily routine as milking times. Even after patriarch Robert Jacquier passed away a few years ago, his wife Dottie has continued to cook for all who can make it to her house at 11:30 am. “Ever since I can remember, my grandparents were adamant that we have lunch with them every day,” says Cricket Jacquier, who runs the farm with his brother, Bobby, their dad, Peter, and Bobby’s two sons, Austin and Dalton. “It always gave me a chance to ask questions,” Dottie adds with a smile, “and it makes them stop to eat.”

Staying Hands-On

“My grandparents started off with nothing. Everything they had was very much earned,” says Cricket. The farm has grown to support several generations and a total of about two dozen employees. The trade-off, Cricket acknowledges, is more management, less hands-on time. “When it was a smaller operation, you had your hands on the cows, on the calves, on the milking equipment, on the tractors every single day,” he says. Sundays, he still milks, though: “There’s nothing like being part of a daily routine that you’re expecting others to do.”
